The “Remade” in France

Altyor is the industrial manufacturer of Bookinou audio readers, created by the start-up Pimely. Our SME now also manages the refurbishment of their end-of-life products, thanks to the implementation of a reconditioning loop.

    End-of-life or end-of-use

The audio reader is a product designed for children aged 2 to 6, to introduce them to the world of books and get them started reading. But once the child reaches the age of 7, what happens to the product without a little brother or sister?

The umpteenth functional electronic product in a drawer or sent for incineration at a waste disposal site. The start-up wanted to find a solution to this end-of-use problem.

    The Bookinou solution

    The rental solution
In 2023, Pimely launched a rental service for teachers, enabling them to offer the Bookinou activity in the classroom during recess. Indeed, Bookinou is supported by the French Ministry of Education as an educational tool. At the end of the rental period, the products can be recovered, refurbished and returned to the market.

    The reconditioning solution
In 2024, Pimely is going one step further by creating a “2nd life” offer for private individuals’ Bookinou. This range of reconditioned products will enable readers to buy a product recovered from a first life and refurbished.

The challenges of the circular economy

    Environmental issues
Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) is the key tool for understanding a product’s environmental footprint. For example, for an electronic product, the production stage accounts for 70% of the climate change indicator. The creation of a reconditioning loop is therefore an essential environmental challenge. If we take the example of the Bookinou, we know from the LCA that manufacturing a new product represents 4.52kg CO2 eq, compared with 1.51 kg CO2 eq, a reduction of 2/3.

A remanufactured product reduces its environmental impact by 2/3 compared with a new product

    Business issues
Controlling a product’s end-of-life is an important financial and reputational issue. It enables us to guarantee our customers optimum product quality, and also to control the price of our products.

    And what about Altyor?

Altyor is extremely proud to be part of the Pimely adventure. In fact, our assembly unit near Orléans is also a remanufacturing unit. So we take back Bookinou at the end of their useful life and refurbish them to give them a new lease of life.
This collaboration is also marked by advice and joint reflection on how to create a differentiating industry. One of the key illustrations of this 2nd life offer is the introduction of a 2-year warranty on the product, rather than the 6-month warranty customary with reconditioned products.

Need to think about your circular model?

Creating your own reconditioning loop is a challenge on several levels:

How do I get my end-of-life products back onto the market?
Is my product repairable, dismountable … In short, is it eco-designed?
How do I set up my new life?

Altyor’s teams, experts in eco-design and the circular economy, will support you in your transformation!

The circular economy aims to reduce waste and maximize the reuse of resources. This is crucial because it minimizes raw material costs by reusing and recycling components: it is a major player in reducing environmental impact.
