Altyor’s eco-responsible approach

Robust commitments for maximum impact
Design for tomorrow

Sensible design for responsible manufacturing

Our position in the industrial sector pushes us to think differently and to raise awareness among our customers about our collective influence on the environment both near and far. To achieve this, Altyor has adopted an eco-responsible approach that aims to control and reduce our environmental footprint.

This vision applies to all our customers’ electronic and mechanical products. It requires a team effort: from our R&D department, through the choice of well-thought-out methods, to our purchasing department, via the sourcing of suitable partners, to our logistics department, in terms of our carbon impact.

This vision revolves
around 4 axes

Planned non-obsolescence has always been one of Altyor’s core values in the design of electronic devices.

Sustainability is a factor in choosing the right materials: the use of recycled materials, for example, such as plastic for products or cardboard for packaging (or from managed forests). We perform qualification tests to ensure the products’ sustainability, including endurance testing to ascertain that the products can withstand adverse weather conditions or wear and tear. Designing something that is both beautiful and strong does not have to cost more.

Altyor has been around for almost 30 years. Our experience combined with feedback from our customers have allowed us to build an unrivalled portfolio of electronic (buttons, LEDs, etc.) and mechanical (screws, material, etc.) products that we know to be reliable and sustainable over time. These also include typical designs, such as the clip-on system, which have been approved by our teams and have become Altyor standards. Within the Ask knowledge management platform, we gather all the building blocks mastered by Altyor and then make them available to our customers.

Finally, we design firmware that can be updated remotely. This allows our customers to make changes to their products, without necessarily starting from scratch and discarding products that are still functional.

The reusable axe is central to this approach and involves many people at Altyor.

The main aim is to reduce the use of raw materials by switching to recycled materials. These measures are certified by organizations such as PLASTI OUEST, which promotes the plastic industry and plastic recycling. However, in order for a product’s plastic material to be reusable, certain factors have to be considered during the design process. First of all, the fact that the product is easily dismantled saves time for the teams that will have to separate the mechanics from the electronics. Then, you have to think about positioning any decorative items (labels, stickers, paint). These decorative elements, once the plastic is reused, can result in aesthetic defects such as black spots. Our R&D teams take this into account to optimize the recycling process.

The optimal axe is about energy.

The objective is this: the less energy the product consumes, the better your energy performance will be. We therefore select energy-efficient components and ensure that the batteries are correctly sized. We also analyze and explore how to optimally manage standby, power supplies and product current leakage and according to the use case and the budgeted product cost. Whenever possible, Altyor encourages the use of batteryless energy such as solar power or mechanical power (EnOcean), as we do for our own products through our subsidiary, NodOn, which specializes in smart homes and smart buildings.

The ethical axe concerns all the measures that we put in place internally, but also externally through our qualified partners.

First and foremost, internally, all employees are made aware of Altyor’s ethical principles. We are also certified by official organizations that attest to the fact that we do not use child labor or forced labor, especially in our dedicated factory in Shanghai. Our suppliers sign a charter guaranteeing compliance with these principles, after an audit of their facilities has been conducted. Moreover, thanks to Silicon Expert, which is a recognized tool in the world of electronics manufacturing, we can ensure that our choice of electronic components considers the environmental risks and complies with the European RoHs directives and the Reach regulations.

Certification

Our eco-responsible approach has been certified by PLASTI-OUEST, an organization that promotes the plastic industry and the recycling of plastic materials (now part of Polyvia, Union of Polymer Processors).

The 3 approaches
Approach 1

Life cycle analysis and measurement of the environmental and social impacts of products developed and manufactured by Altyor.

Approach 2

Research into environmentally responsible solutions in the design and manufacture of our customers’ products

Approach 3

Monitoring the latest technological developments to bring innovative solutions to our customers

CSR Charter (business ethics and social responsibility)

Altyor’s CSR Charter brings together all the ethical and social principles established within our teams; principles such as non-discrimination and decent working conditions that underpin our commitment to our employees, customers, suppliers, and partners.
